More women play digital games; however, more men call themselves ‘gamers’

In Brazil, more women than men are used to playing digital games. However, more men consider themselves “gamers”. According to the PGB Brazil 2021 survey, 72% of respondents said they used to play games. Of this total, 51.5% are women and 48.5% are men.

When asked, however, if they recognize themselves as “gamers “, only 61.6% said yes. Of the men, 65.8% identified themselves in this way. Among women, the number dropped to 57.5%. According to the survey, 41.6% of respondents play games on their smartphones. Already 25.8% use video games; 18.3%, computers; 9.2% notebooks; 2.2% tablets and 2.9% play games on smart TVs or other devices. These numbers, however, change according to the gender of the gamer. Among women, 62.2% play games on smartphones; 40.4% play via computer, and 38.1% play via video games. Among men, video games are preferred: 61.9% play there. Then comes the computer, with 59.6%, while the smartphone appears with 37.8%.

Asked about the environments they use to play games, 97% mentioned their own home; 28.4% other people’s house; 15.5% play at work, and 13.7% play in traffic or when they are moving somewhere. Only 5.3% mentioned environments such as land houses.

Among “casual gamers”, 55.8% are women, 36.2% are between 16 and 24 years old and 58.3% have the smartphone as their favorite platform. Being a “casual gamer”, however, does not mean that they play little: 29.7% said they play daily in sessions of up to an hour. “Hardcore gamers “, however, play more. In this group, 55.4% said they played every day, in matches lasting one to three hours. In this group, men are the majority: 52.9% of the total. 37.8% of them are between 25 and 34 years old and 31.2% have the smartphone as their favorite platform.

Other features

The survey also mapped that 46% of gamers identify themselves as being white, 36.7% are brown; 13.6% black; 2% yellow, and 0.6% indigenous. Of the total, 34.4% live with their parents; 30.9% live with their children; 20.2% live as a couple, without children at home and 10.8% live alone.
