What Is The Difference Between A Dab Rig And A Bong?

Published

on

I’ve enjoyed cannabis for a long time and I’m always keen to try new ways of consuming it. In recent years, dabbing has grown in popularity, especially in the legal states of the US where concentrate is readily available.

About three years before writing this post, I started researching and trying all different types of dabs and concentrates to find out the differences. I even made my own concentrate at home. In this post I want to share with you what I experienced, what I learned and answer any questions you might have.

Below I provide you with a table of contents so that you can jump straight to the content you want to know the most about in case you don’t have enough time to read the entire post.

What is the difference between a dab rig and a bong?

Dab rigs and bongs differ in many ways:

A dab rig uses dabs for smoking. This material is stronger compared to dry herbs. When smoking a bong , the buds are lit to create smoke. When smoking dab rigs under, the concentrate is placed on a pre-heated nail or banger. Dab rigs are smaller in size. It is thought that less THC is lost on combustion because the smoke has to travel a shorter distance.

Regardless of what you choose, the choice between a dab rig and bong comes down to user preference. Some prefer stronger flavors, others prefer a cleaner taste. If you prefer dab rigs, we have covered the best places to buy dab rigs. However, if bongs are your thing, we have the best bong brands for this year as well.

What are dabs?

As I began my journey through the world of dabbing, I didn’t know where to begin my research. Although I’ve been Bud and a hash smoker and knowledgeable about a bong, I wasn’t entirely sure which articles actually talked about dabbing.

A dab is a concentrated form of cannabis. Therefore it is much stronger than any weed you have ever smoked before. Dabs can contain up to 90% THC. For comparison, the average weed you can buy these days has a THC content of around 10-15%. Top strains that are only available in the legal states of the US or Amsterdam can have up to 25% in extreme cases.

Since when are dabs a thing?

Since there is archeological evidence that cannabis was consumed by several ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and the Greeks, some sources claim to have evidence that concentrate was used in those times as well.

I don’t want to delve too deeply into this speculation as there are already several articles about it. My favorite item is this one. Check it out if you like, but be sure to come back for more Rigs!

Personally, I think it’s very likely that these claims are true, since the creation of primitive concentrates is possible with very simple means and limited scientific knowledge. One of the first documented uses of cannabis concentrate this century dates back to World War II, where concentrated cannabis was used alongside LSD in biochemical interrogation programs.

Ideas from these programs were incorporated into the CIA’s famous MK ULTRA program, in which drops of cannabis concentrate were applied to cigarettes and then given to subjects under interrogation to reduce their cognitive abilities, making them more vulnerable to divulging information that they are supposed to keep secret.

The first article published on the internet describing the making of dabs using the butane vaporization method appeared in the online psychoactive library Erowid in 1999 under the name “Hash Honey Oil Technique”. However, it took another 10 years for dabs to gain mainstream popularity, leading to concentrate products being available in pharmacies in the legal states of the US and the Netherlands.

Today, concentrated cannabis products are poised to dominate America’s marijuana industry, accounting for well over 35% of the total market. Experts are speculating that the concentrate market will hit the $8 billion mark by 2022.

Polka dot textures

Dabs can come in a wide variety of textures, ranging from rock hard, brittle, and dry to super sticky, wet, and soft. There are different names for each different type of texture and appearance of dabs and I’ll explain them all so you can express yourself like a total cannabis connoisseur from this day on.
